After my initial training in the commercial building industry I was attracted to traditional plastering. I worked with a number of master plasterers. The techniques I learned had been passed down for generations. The more I learned, the more I admired the historic work of the artisans who plied their trade across Europe. I was particularly drawn to Italian plasterwork. The next step in my education was to study in Italy. I was introduced to a variety of methods which were used and had been popular for hundreds of years. My training took me to the historic buildings of Venice, Rome, Verona and Florence. The beauty and workmanship were outstanding. The style known as Scagliola intrigued me.
I returned to England to continue my work and seek fine examples of decorative plasterwork. I visited the Reform Club in London and was amazed by the beautiful staircase and stairwell which was finished in Scagliola. On my next visit to Italy I continued my interest in Scagliola, working alongside, and learning from, Italy's supreme craftsmen, some of whom had taken years perfecting their own particular style. Once again I returned to England and began to hone and develop my own techniques which would emulate the best Italian examples of Scagliola. Since then I have revisited Italy a number of times to exchange ideas with my contemporaries.
I remain amazed that the few basic constituents have changed little yet they produce such a beautiful, high gloss surface which enhances the subtle variations in colour. I mix my own pigments to create unique effects. I make mirrors, wall panels, table tops, and can inlay any of my work. I also undertake commissions and bespoke work all of which is identified with its own product number. My creations are equally at home in a contemporary setting or in a more formal interior.
