TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY PLASTERWORK CREATIONS

Stucco Biography

Some years ago I trained in commercial building. This led me to concentrate on traditional plastering. I
worked with a number of master plasterers. The techniques I learned had been passed down for
generations.

This work introduced me to European and in particular Italian styles of plasterwork, and therefore, the
next step in my education was to study in Italy. I was introduced to a variety of methods which had
been popular throughout history. I was particularly intrigued by the method known as Scagiola.

I returned to England to continue my work and seek out fine examples of decorative plasterwork. I
visited the Reform Club in London and was amazed and entranced by the beautiful staircase and
stairwell which was finished in Scagiola.

I went back to Italy to pursue an interest in Scagiola, working along side and learning from Italy's
supreme craftsman, many of whom had taken years perfecting their own particular style.

Once again I returned to England to hone and develop my own techniques which by trial and error could
emulate Italian examples of Scagiola. Since then I have revisited Italy a number of times to exchange
ideas.

I find Scagiola an ideal creative medium to produce a wide variety of patterns, colours and finishes.
Although the basic constituents have not changed I am enthralled how so few ingredients can produce a
beautiful, high gloss surface which enhances the subtle variations in colour and am able to control the
colours, effects and can even inlay designs.

Now, I create mirrors, wall panels and table tops. Each is unique and accompanied with its own product
number. My work is equally at home in a contemporary setting or would grace a more formal interior.
